Instructions for Herbst Appliances
The Herbst appliance is an orthopedic appliance used to enhance the position of a retrognathic (set back) lower jaw and is worn 12 to 14 months.
— The appliance is cleaned using your toothbrush. Brush along the gum line and around the framework of the appliance. Brush each time you eat and before going to bed.
— The Herbst may cause sore teeth and facial muscles for the first 3 to 5 days and cause sore spots inside your lip and cheeks. This will get better after you get used to the appliance.
— Try to limit side to side movement of your lower jaw and do not grind your teeth.
— Stay away from popcorn, hard and sticky foods. Cut meat into small pieces.
— If you notice the metal bands around your teeth are loose, call our office for an appointment. Leaving the bands loose could cause the Herbst to break. Broken appliances require repair. If the appliance does break, call our office and bring all pieces with you.
— If your Herbst is loose and cannot see us right away, you can remove the 4 screws with a small screwdriver. Place screws, rods and tubes in envelopes or baggies marked right and left and bring with you to your appointment.
